These notes occupy an awkward bureaucratic moment: printed under Soviet authority for a republic that was already moving toward independence, they were issued as coupons to supplement — not replace — the Soviet ruble, rationing consumer goods during the supply crisis of the early 1990s. The karbovanets' revival was administrative necessity before it became monetary policy.
P#71 is exceptionally large for a circulating note of the period, which reflects its coupon-book origins. The format was never designed for pockets or wallets, and heavy use shows — worn, torn, and taped examples are far more common in the market than intact ones.
