| Obverse description | Three-quarter left-facing portrait of Prime Minister Michael Somare, rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored field, with finely detailed facial features and short hair. The legend PAPUA NEW GUINEA arcs along the upper periphery, while the inscription PRIME MINISTER MICHAEL SOMARE appears in two lines below the portrait. The date 1975 is positioned in the lower field. A beaded border frames the entire design. |

| Additional information |
Papua New Guinea achieved independence from Australian administration on 16 September 1975, and this issue was struck specifically to mark that transition — one of the first coinage programs authorized by the newly established Bank of Papua New Guinea. The 0.900 fineness reflects a deliberate alignment with established Commonwealth gold standards rather than the fine gold specifications favored by many contemporary commemorative programs.
KM#9 was produced in limited proof quantities and saw virtually no circulation, making wear specimens essentially nonexistent.
