The 1995 series marked a significant redenomination period for Malawi, as the kwacha had been under sustained devaluation pressure through the early 1990s following the collapse of donor support after Banda's government faced international criticism over human rights. The 100 Kwacha was the highest denomination in this particular De La Rue printing run, reflecting the inflationary drift that had eroded the note's real purchasing power considerably by the time it reached circulation.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement in Malawian currency production stretches back to independence, making this a continuity printing rather than a new contract relationship.
