The "Femeia de Azi" — Woman of Today — series was introduced in 1992 as Romania struggled through the economic chaos that followed the collapse of Ceaușescu's government. Hyperinflation was already eroding purchasing power rapidly; the 100 lei note, worth meaningful sums just a few years earlier, had become a denomination of diminishing practical utility almost from the moment it was issued.
The series name itself was something of a propaganda reversal — state imagery now celebrating an idealized modern Romanian woman rather than industrial workers or socialist heroes.
