The 2006 series marked Banco de Moçambique's first significant redesign since the catastrophic hyperinflation of the early 2000s forced a redenomination — the 2006 metical replaced the old metical at a rate of 1,000 to 1, effectively wiping three zeros from every denomination. This note, printed by Thomas De La Rue in London, entered circulation as part of a completely new currency family intended to restore public confidence after years of severe purchasing power erosion.
De La Rue's security specification for this series was relatively modest by contemporary standards — watermark and thread only, without the foil elements or color-shifting ink that appeared on higher-denomination issues from comparable economies at the time.
