Reverse description Central field features a finely detailed full-body portrait of an oryx (gemsbok antelope) standing in profile facing left, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail including its characteristic long straight horns. The Arabic legend 'جزر الشفارين' (Islas Chafarinas) is inscribed in a vertical arrangement along the upper right field. The Hijri date '١٤٣٥' (1435 AH) is placed in the exergue at the bottom of the coin. The field is otherwise plain, lending prominence to the wildlife motif.

Additional information

The Chafarinas Islands — three uninhabited rocky outcrops off the Moroccan coast near Melilla — have been Spanish territory since 1848, when the Navy seized them hours before France could establish a foothold. Morocco has periodically demanded their return, most recently pressing the claim through diplomatic channels in the 1990s. Spain issues notional peseta-denominated pieces for each of its territories outside the eurozone proper, a legal fiction that keeps the sovereign claim administratively active.
