The Banco Rural de Crédito Hipotecario de Costa Rica was one of several short-lived private banks chartered in Costa Rica during the 1860s–1870s under legislation designed to stimulate agricultural credit — specifically mortgage-backed lending to rural landowners. The institution never achieved the foothold of contemporaries like the Banco Anglo-Costarricense, and its note-issuing career was brief.

The embossed seal was the bank's primary authentication device, a common expedient for institutions without access to sophisticated intaglio security printing. Notes of this series are genuinely rare in any condition — survivor populations are small enough that auction appearances attract serious attention from Central American specialists.
