Additional information

Uruguay's early 1970s coinage program was complicated by chronic inflation that rendered denominations obsolete almost as fast as they could be authorized. This 100 Pesos piece was struck as a pattern — meaning it never reached circulation — likely evaluated as part of an effort to rationalize the currency before the 1975 redenomination that replaced 1,000 old pesos with a single new peso.

The unusual ternary alloy — copper, zinc, and nickel in proportions that deviate from standard nickel silver — suggests the mint was testing cost-effective alternatives to more expensive cupronickel compositions under fiscal pressure.
