Fantasy issues — privately produced novelty notes with no legal tender status and no issuing authority beyond the printer — occupy a contested corner of the hobby. This one takes its theme from Lagoa do Fogo, the volcanic crater lake in the São Miguel highlands, a reasonable choice for Azorean imagery. The denomination in pounds rather than euros has no geographic logic; the Azores use the euro, and no "Fantasy Bank" has ever operated there. The Elizabeth II portrait is borrowed currency, so to speak — her face lends an air of officialdom that the issuer has no claim to.
Polymer with holographic foil on a fantasy note is an unusual production choice, since the manufacturing cost approaches or exceeds collector resale value at this scale.
