| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the traditional quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) — surmounted by a royal crown. The date 17-55 is divided across the field on either side of the shield. The circular legend reads IOSEPHUS I D G P REX ET AFR, identifying King José I by the Grace of God, King of Portugal and the Algarves. The coin exhibits a milled border with fine dentilation around the rim. |

| Reverse description | Central device depicts an armillary sphere — a navigational instrument emblematic of Portuguese maritime exploration — rendered with a detailed gridded globe and intersecting meridian bands. Two crossed arrows or spears flank the sphere diagonally. The abbreviated legend SUB Q SIGN NATA (Sub Quod Signo Nata, meaning 'Born under this sign') is arranged around the device in the four quadrants of the field, with a small mint mark at the base. The rim is dentilated in keeping with the milled production technique. |
