Russia issued a series of gold-plated commemorative banknotes to mark the 2018 FIFA World Cup, held across eleven Russian cities. These are not legal tender in any conventional sense — they were sold as collector items through Sberbank and similar retail channels, never entering circulation. The gold plating is applied to the printed paper surface, a technique used widely by commercial souvenir producers in the 2000s and 2010s, most notably in China, and carries no monetary backing beyond the nominal face value printed on the substrate.
The paper beneath the plating is standard banknote stock, making these vulnerable to delamination with handling.
