Issued to mark the centenary of Gandhi's departure from Mauritius in 1901, following his work there on behalf of the indentured Indian labor community. Gandhi spent time on the island en route between South Africa and India, and his advocacy for Mauritian Indians — largely brought over under indenture after the abolition of slavery — made him a figure of genuine local significance, not merely an imported hero for the occasion.
KM#65 appears in relatively modest mintage figures for a commemorative silver of this period, though the Bank of Mauritius issued it through the usual proof and uncirculated channels.
