The Reiwa era began on May 1, 2019, the day Emperor Naruhito ascended the Paulownia Throne following his father Akihito's abdication — the first voluntary imperial abdication in Japan in over two centuries. Coins dated to the first year of a new era consistently see elevated hoarding by the Japanese public, which routinely pulls Reiwa 1 issues from circulation almost immediately after release.
The 100 yen denomination has circulated unchanged in this composition since 1967.
