Obverse description Within a pentagonal field with a raised rim, a heraldic coat of arms occupies the central area, featuring an elephant head crest above a vertically striped shield flanked by a rampant leopard to the left and a rampant lion to the right as supporters. A scroll beneath the shield bears the legend SONQOBA SIMUNYE in relief. The territorial name KWA ZULU appears in large raised Latin letters along the lower flat edge of the pentagon.

Additional information

Issued to mark the centenary of John Langalibalele Dube's death — Dube being the founding president of the South African Native National Congress, the organization that became the ANC — this coin sits in a commemorative program that South Africa has used intermittently to rehabilitate figures marginalized under apartheid historiography. The Zulu-language title translates roughly as "100 Years for Zulu," a nod to Dube's role in developing written Zulu literature and founding the newspaper Ilanga lase Natal in 1903.
