| Obverse description | Within a pentagonal field with a raised rim, a heraldic coat of arms occupies the central area, featuring an elephant head crest above a vertically striped shield flanked by a rampant leopard to the left and a rampant lion to the right as supporters. A scroll beneath the shield bears the legend SONQOBA SIMUNYE in relief. The territorial name KWA ZULU appears in large raised Latin letters along the lower flat edge of the pentagon. |

Issued to mark the centenary of John Langalibalele Dube's death — Dube being the founding president of the South African Native National Congress, the organization that became the ANC — this coin sits in a commemorative program that South Africa has used intermittently to rehabilitate figures marginalized under apartheid historiography. The Zulu-language title translates roughly as "100 Years for Zulu," a nod to Dube's role in developing written Zulu literature and founding the newspaper Ilanga lase Natal in 1903.
