The 1000 Cruzados note falls squarely within one of Brazil's most chaotic monetary episodes. The Cruzado was itself a 1986 emergency replacement for the Cruzeiro — a redenomination at 1000:1 — introduced under the Plano Cruzado in a failed attempt to break hyperinflation through price freezes and currency shock. By 1987 those measures had collapsed, and the Cruzado was already depreciating rapidly toward its own replacement by the Cruzado Novo in 1989.
The two signature combinations reflect real ministerial turnover under President Sarney. Bresser Pereira was Finance Minister only from April to December 1987, replaced by Maílson da Nóbrega — changes that mid-series signature splits on circulating notes document more honestly than most official accounts.
