The United Nations Decade for Women ran from 1976 to 1985, and Greece issued this coin in the closing year of that program. Greece had only returned to democratic governance in 1974 following the collapse of the military junta, and commemorative silver issues of the mid-1980s were partly a vehicle for the new republic to align itself visibly with international institutions and humanitarian programs.
