Ani was the medieval capital of the Bagratid Armenian kingdom and, at its peak around 1000 AD, a city of perhaps 100,000 people — larger than London or Paris at the time. The coin was struck the same year Armenia marked the 1700th anniversary of Christianity's adoption as the state religion, and the Ani series was part of a broader numismatic program asserting cultural continuity across centuries of foreign occupation, Soviet erasure, and post-independence nation-building.
The ruined city sits in present-day Turkey, visible from the Armenian border but inaccessible for decades. That territorial dimension gives the series an edge that purely commemorative issues rarely carry.
