| Reverse description | A finely detailed Armenian khachkar (stone cross) occupies the centre of the field, rendered with intricate interlaced foliate and geometric ornamentation characteristic of medieval Armenian ecclesiastical stone-carving tradition. The Armenian legend ՔՐԻՍՏՈՆՅԱ ՀԱՅԱՍՏԱՆ-1700 arcs around the upper periphery, flanked by decorative dot borders. The Latin inscription KHATCHKAR appears to the upper right of the cross, with the numeral 301 to the lower left, the word Armenia to the right, and the year 2001 in the lower right field, commemorating 1700 years of Christianity in Armenia (301 AD). |

| Additional information |
Artsakh — the self-declared republic occupying the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region — issued commemorative coinage in the early 2000s largely as an assertion of statehood, recognized by virtually no UN member. This 2003 piece marks the 1700th anniversary of Armenia's adoption of Christianity in 301 AD, when King Tiridates III converted following his reported cure by Gregory the Illuminator, making Armenia the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion.
