Reverse description The reverse carries a large maritime vignette in intaglio, with a robed figure viewed from behind gazing out to sea toward a fleet of sailing vessels and a steam-powered ship, evoking Portugal's Age of Discovery. The circular seal of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, inscribed 'LISBOA-1864', is centrally placed over the scene, while an oval guilloche reserve occupies the right field. The bank name BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO and the legend PAGAVEL EM MOÇAMBIQUE are printed across the top, with the denomination MIL ESCUDOS in bold lettering centered in the lower portion.
