The Institut d'Émission Malgache was established specifically to manage Madagascar's transition away from the CFA franc zone following independence in 1960, and this note belongs to the brief window before the Malagasy franc was itself replaced by the ariary system. Beltrand was among the most accomplished intaglio engravers working for the Banque de France print works in the postwar decades — his hand is visible across numerous Francophone African issues of the period, as Paris retained printing contracts well after political independence shifted the map.

The dual denomination — francs alongside ariary — reflects the 5:1 conversion ratio formally adopted at issue, a pairing that persisted on Malagasy notes for years.
