Abel Tasman's 1642 voyage aboard the Heemskerck, accompanied by the fluit Zeehaen, was the first European expedition to reach Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) and New Zealand — without Tasman ever setting foot on either. The Dutch East India Company funded the journey not out of geographic curiosity but to find a southern trade route to Chile. He found coastlines instead of commerce, and the VOC considered the expedition a commercial failure.
This coin is part of a BCEAO-authorized collector series issued under license — the CFA franc connection to the subject matter is purely jurisdictional.
