The IEOM was established in 1966 to manage currency across French Polynesia, New Caledonia, and Wallis and Futuna — three territories separated by thousands of kilometres of Pacific Ocean but sharing a single banknote series. The franc CFP (Change Franc Pacifique, later rebranded Comptoirs Français du Pacifique) has been pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 1 EUR = 119.3317 XPF since 1999, when the euro replaced the French franc as the anchor currency.

This P#6 belongs to the second polymer-era generation — though notably printed on cotton rather than polymer, bucking the regional trend toward plastic substrate that neighbours like Australia had long adopted. Banque de France retained production throughout the series.
