Niger has no indigenous lion population and never has — the animal's appearance on this issue is purely emblematic, borrowed from the broader West African iconographic tradition rather than any local fauna. The coin was produced for the collector market under Niger's arrangement with the Berne-based MDM distribution network, one of several landlocked Francophone states that have licensed their mint authority for bullion and novelty issues since the 1990s.
