Equatorial Guinea has issued coins under its own name since independence in 1968, but its membership in the Central African CFA franc zone — where the actual circulating currency is managed by the BEAC — means domestic commemorative issues like this one have no monetary function within the country's own economy. They are produced for the collector market and legal tender in name only.
Mbañé is a disputed island in the Corisco Bay, claimed by both Equatorial Guinea and Gabon; the territorial dispute remained unresolved by the International Court of Justice as of 2023.
