Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Marco Polo in three-quarter view occupies the right portion of the note, set against an intricate guilloche underprint in red and violet tones. To the center-left, a circular medallion bearing the Lion of St. Mark above the coat of arms of Venice is rendered in fine engraving, with the denomination '1000' printed in large multicolor numerals below. The legend 'LIRE MILLE' and 'BANCA D'ITALIA' appear in bold letterpress, with two manuscript signatures below their respective titles at lower left.
