The People's Republic of Mozambique was in the middle of a grinding civil war when this series ran — RENAMO's campaign against FRELIMO infrastructure made physical cash distribution a logistical and security problem across much of the country. Notes in circulation in rural areas often show heavy wear disproportionate to their face value precisely because banking infrastructure had collapsed in many provinces.
The print run of just over twelve million across a six-year span is modest for a high denomination in an inflationary economy, and Mozambique's meticais suffered considerable purchasing-power erosion through the late 1980s before the 1990 currency reforms.
