The 2006 Banco de Moçambique series, of which this is the highest denomination, was issued as Mozambique's economy was stabilizing following the 2000 meticais-to-1 metical redenomination introduced in 2006 — the first revaluation in the country's post-independence monetary history. The 1000 metical note therefore entered circulation at the top of an entirely new scale, replacing notes that had accumulated six zeros over decades of severe inflation stretching back through the civil war years.
Giesecke & Devrient's Leipzig facility handled production, continuing a long relationship between southern and eastern African central banks and that printer.
