Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Samora Moisés Machel, first President of Mozambique, at right against a yellow-green guilloche underprint with spiral rosette patterns. At left, a colour-shifting elephant vignette overprinted with the numeral 1000 serves as an optically variable security element; below it the denomination MIL METICAIS appears in large green letterpress. The date 16 DE JUNHO DE 2024, the Governor's signature, and a small white elephant emblem are positioned centrally beneath the Banco de Moçambique title legend.

Mozambique's 2024 banknote series was introduced against a backdrop of persistent inflationary pressure — the metical had shed significant value through the 2010s and early 2020s, and the 1000-metical denomination, once a high-value note, had become routine in everyday transactions. The redesigned series reflected Banco de Moçambique's push to bring security specifications closer to current BNDES and central bank standards across the region.

Pick 160 is recent enough that secondary market pricing remains unsettled and population data from grading services is essentially nonexistent. Cotton substrate rather than polymer is a notable choice given that several neighboring central banks have moved toward polymer for higher denominations.
