Uruguay redenominated its currency in 1975 — one nuevo peso for a thousand old pesos — and then again in 1993, when the nuevo peso was replaced by the peso uruguayo at the same rate. This 1000 Nuevos Pesos note therefore belongs to the twilight of a denomination that was itself born as an anti-inflation measure, only to be overtaken by inflation again within two decades. By the time this series was circulating, annual inflation in Uruguay was running above 100%.
Thomas De La Rue printed the series in London. The watermark is the primary security feature — relatively modest for a high-denomination note in a period when regional central banks were increasingly demanding more sophisticated protection.
