Western Sahara has no functioning government capable of issuing currency — the territory has been administered by Morocco since 1976, following Spain's withdrawal and a failed partition agreement with Mauritania. These "coins" were produced by a private company exploiting the name of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which controls no mint and has never issued circulating coinage. They are fantasy pieces, not official issues, despite appearing in some reference catalogs including KM.
