Obverse description Dominantly green and light brown, the obverse carries an intaglio portrait vignette of poet Juana de Ibarbourou at center-left, framed by intricate guilloche underprint work across the face. A metallic security band runs vertically through the note bearing a latent image of the national coat of arms and the inscription '1000 BCU', visible by transparency, while a grey oval at upper right contains an optically variable latent image alternating between the letters 'BCU' and a head of Artigas. Serial numbers appear in two orientations — vertically in red at upper left and horizontally in black at lower right — with the face value rendered in numerals and words across multiple positions, and two raised concentric circles at upper left serving as a tactile feature for the visually impaired.

Two printers sharing production of a single series is not unusual for high-denomination notes, but the split here between Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig and Oberthur in France means that two signature combinations correspond to at least two distinct print sources — distinguishing them requires close attention to minor typographic and security-feature variations rather than date alone. The 2011 signature pairing reflects the appointment of Mario Bergara as BCU President following a routine institutional transition, not any monetary emergency.

Uruguay's 1000 Peso Uruguayo was the highest denomination in general circulation for much of this period, introduced as part of the post-2002 banking crisis redenomination that replaced the Peso with the Peso Uruguayo at 1:1000.
