Fray Bentos, the small city on the Río Uruguay for which this coin is named, was once home to the Liebig Extract of Meat Company's processing plant — a facility so dominant in 19th-century global beef trade that the town's name became synonymous with canned corned beef across Europe. The plant, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, processed millions of cattle during its operational peak and supplied rations to Allied forces in both World Wars.
Uruguay has issued a number of regional commemoratives through the Banco Central, and this 2016 piece falls within that series honoring cities of historic economic significance.
