Tanzania issued this coin as part of the United Nations Decade for Women (1976–1985), a program that generated a substantial run of commemorative gold and silver issues from developing nations, many produced in small quantities for the collector market rather than domestic circulation. The Bank of Tanzania contracted several such commemoratives during this period, most struck at European mints rather than domestically.

KM#17 is a low-mintage issue; surviving population data from major grading services remains thin.
