Obverse description At center-left, the Mongolian national emblem — the Soyombo symbol — is depicted in relief, incorporating its characteristic stacked elements including flame, sun, moon, and yin-yang motifs framed by vertical bars. To the right of the Soyombo, the country name appears in traditional Mongolian vertical script, with the Latin legend MONGOLIA inscribed along the right inner border. The denomination 1000 is shown in large numerals at the bottom center, with the Tögrög designation rendered below in traditional Mongolian script. The entire design is set within a matte field bordered by a serrated rim.

Reverse description The central device features two gold-plated nude male figures rendered in the classical Greek athletic tradition, depicted in full stride as ancient Olympic runners, their musculature finely detailed in high relief. The runners are selectively gold-plated, creating a striking two-tone contrast against the matte silver field. In the background, incuse engravings of a classical Greek temple with columns and a solitary column are visible to the left and right respectively. The legend OLYMPIC GAMES is inscribed along the upper border in Latin letters, while the denomination 1000 ТӨГРӨГ appears in the lower field within the central oval device, and the date 1996 is placed at the bottom exergue.
