The wolverine (*Gulo gulo*) has a near-mythological reputation in Mongolia's northern taiga and mountain forests — locals have long regarded it as supernaturally strong relative to its size, capable of driving bears and wolves from kills. Mongolia issued this coin under its wildlife conservation series, which has used the 62.2g silver format repeatedly since the 2010s to highlight species under pressure from habitat fragmentation and poaching across the Central Asian steppe corridor.
Wolverine populations in Mongolia are poorly documented; the IUCN lists the species as data-deficient across much of its range east of the Urals.
