The Shōwa Emperor Hirohito died in January 1989 after the longest reign in modern Japanese imperial history — 62 years. His era name was retired at death, as is custom, making any centennial commemoration an unusual act of retrospective reckoning rather than a living celebration. This issue marks what would have been the 100th year of that era, a count that continues officially in Japanese government records even decades after Reiwa began.
