Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Natsume Sōseki (born Kinnosuke Natsume), the celebrated Meiji-era novelist, at right within an oval vignette, his name inscribed in kanji below. To the left, a large multicolour guilloche rosette bears the denomination 千円 in kanji at centre, surmounted by the issuer's title 日本銀行券 and flanked by 日本銀行 below; a red seal of the Finance Ministry's Printing Bureau appears at lower centre-left. The numeral 1000 is printed in dark ink at both upper corners, with fine lathe-work guilloche borders running along all edges.
