Additional information

Seborga is a microstate claimant in the Ligurian Alps whose modern "principality" status rests on a 1963 local vote and the discovery of documents suggesting the village was never formally ceded to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1729. The luigino — revived here as the luigini — was the actual currency of the historical Principality of Seborga, a silver coin widely counterfeited across the Levant in the 17th century precisely because its low silver content made it profitable to imitate.

This 2021 bimetallic issue is a collector novelty with no recognized legal tender status beyond Seborga's own claims, but the historical monetary lineage it invokes is genuine.
