George Enescu — Romania's most internationally celebrated composer — was born on 19 August 1881 in Liveni, then part of the Kingdom of Romania. A 2026 commemorative issue marking the 145th anniversary of his birth follows a well-established BNR tradition: the central bank has previously honored Enescu on Romanian currency, most notably on the 10,000 lei note of the late communist period. Commemorative banknotes in this series are legal tender but produced in limited quantities, intended primarily for collectors rather than the till.
