The Warsaw Ghetto scrip was not issued by the Nazis — it was produced under orders from the German occupation authorities but formally attributed to the Rada Żydowska, the Jewish Council that the Germans forced into administrative compliance. This distinction mattered legally to the occupiers and meant almost nothing to those who used the notes. The scrip circulated within the sealed ghetto as the only permitted internal medium of exchange, deliberately severed from the zloty economy outside the walls.
By 1943, the ghetto population had been reduced from over 400,000 to fewer than 60,000 through deportations to Treblinka. The April uprising began that same year. Most surviving examples of this scrip exist because they were never spent.
