Standard Chartered has held a note-issuing licence in Hong Kong since the colonial banking ordinances of the nineteenth century, but commemorative denominations are a different matter. The $150 note — issued to mark the bank's 150th anniversary — is one of the very few non-decimal denominations ever placed into legal tender circulation in Hong Kong, a jurisdiction that otherwise maintains strict denominational discipline. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority approved the issue, but it was never intended for everyday transactional use; most examples were sold in presentation folders and moved directly into collections.
The Pick reference P#296 places it firmly within the commemorative issues that the HKMA began permitting from the late 1990s onward.
