Additional information

The ECU — European Currency Unit — was never legal tender in Portugal or anywhere else, but a wave of collector issues exploiting the denomination flooded European mints in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Portugal's Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda produced several of these pieces timed to Portugal's growing integration into what would become the European Union, a process that had begun with accession in 1986. The X# prefix in Krause confirms its status as a purely exonumia issue, outside any official monetary framework.
