The apsar is the official currency of Abkhazia, a territory whose international recognition remains disputed — acknowledged by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and a handful of others, but not by the UN or the majority of sovereign states. The Bank of Abkhazia has leaned heavily into collector issues as a vehicle for soft-power signaling, producing a wide range of wildlife and botanical commemoratives largely aimed at the numismatic market rather than circulation.
Pterocarya fraxinifolia, the Caucasian wingnut, is native to the wetland forests of the South Caucasus and northern Iran. Its inclusion here reflects the genuine ecological specificity of Abkhazia's coastal lowlands, where the species grows along riverbanks in the Kodori and Bzyp river valleys.
