Additional information

Eduardo Abaroa was a civilian customs official killed at Calama on March 23, 1879, during the opening engagement of the War of the Pacific — Bolivia's catastrophic conflict with Chile that ultimately cost the country its entire coastline. His reported refusal to surrender ("Surrender? Your grandmother should surrender!") made him a national martyr almost immediately. Bolivia has no shortage of commemorative coinage honoring him, but the 2017 bimetallic modernization of the circulating series gave Abaroa a permanent place in everyday commerce rather than limiting him to collector issues.
