Peru's centavo coinage of this period was struck under contract arrangements that shifted between domestic and foreign mints depending on political stability and available capital. The 1919 issue falls within the presidency of Augusto B. Leguía's first term, just before his 1919 coup — which he launched partly on the pretext that the existing government had stolen his electoral victory — ushered in the eleven-year Oncenio dictatorship. Whether this particular striking predates or postdates that July coup depends on quarter of production, a distinction the die records do not cleanly resolve.
