Reverse description The reverse presents the denomination '2' in large numerals above the word CENTAVOS, all enclosed within an open wreath of laurel branches. The date 1878 appears in the lower exergue, flanked on either side by a five-pointed star. The peripheral legend DIOS PATRIA LIBERTAD is inscribed along the upper arc, separated by additional stars, and the entire design is framed by a beaded inner border with a reeded outer rim.

The Dominican Republic's 1878 coinage proposals came during a period of acute political instability — the country had changed governments repeatedly since separating from Haiti in 1844, and monetary infrastructure remained underdeveloped. Essai pieces from this year were struck in Paris, almost certainly by the Monnaie de Paris, which handled trial strikings for numerous smaller nations lacking domestic minting capacity.

No regular-issue 2 Centavos in this composition and date entered circulation. The essai remained a proposal only.
