Reverse description The numeral '2' appears prominently in the right field, flanked by a naturalistic spray of Kowhai (Sophora microphylla) branches bearing pendant clusters of elongated golden flower buds and pinnate leaves extending across the field. The designer's initials 'JB' for James Berry are incused at the bottom centre of the design. No country name or date appears on this reverse, which is the standard New Zealand 2 cents reverse die.

Additional information

New Zealand decimalized on 10 July 1967, replacing the pound system overnight. In the lead-up to that changeover, the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra produced the new decimal coinage under contract. The "mule" designation here refers to a die pairing error — obverse and reverse dies intended for different denominations or issue years were inadvertently married during production, a not uncommon hazard when multiple denominations are struck simultaneously on a single mint floor under deadline pressure.

Specimens are rare. Most were caught before release.
