By the mid-1980s, Fiji's small-denomination bronze coinage was already economically marginal — production costs were pressing uncomfortably close to face value. The 2-cent piece survived only a few more years before Fiji's 1990 decimal coinage reshuffle effectively rendered it obsolete, a fate common to low-denomination bronzes across Pacific island economies during this period.
