Zimbabwe's first post-independence banknote series, of which this is the lowest denomination, was issued from 1980 following the country's transition from Rhodesia. At that point the Zimbabwe dollar traded at a premium to the US dollar — roughly 1.47 USD to 1 ZWD at introduction — a fact that renders the note's later history almost darkly ironic given what the currency eventually became.
Printed in-house by the Reserve Bank rather than contracted to an overseas security printer, which was unusual for a newly independent African nation at the time.
