Pitcairn's connection to William Bligh is indirect and often misread. Bligh was never on Pitcairn — he was cast adrift after the 1789 mutiny and navigated 3,618 nautical miles to Timor in an open launch, one of the most remarkable feats of dead reckoning in maritime history. It was Fletcher Christian and the remaining mutineers who settled Pitcairn in 1790, burning the Bounty in the harbor to avoid detection. The island has issued Bligh's likeness largely on the strength of that associated notoriety.
